Tom Fosterling

Tom Forsterling

Tom Forsterling’s baseball journey began at Sheboygan North High School, where he played in the American Legion baseball program. In his senior year, he led the conference in strikeouts, averaging two per inning. His performance earned him a full scholarship to the University of Wisconsin–Parkside, where he quickly worked his way into the starting rotation. During his freshman season in Division II, Forsterling won six games, including key victories over rivals MSOE and MATC and nationally ranked Valdosta State.

After transferring to Mesa College in Arizona and spending a season there, Forsterling returned to Wisconsin and joined the Sheboygan A’s, a semiprofessional team in the Wisconsin State League. He pitched for the A’s for seven seasons, establishing himself as one of the club’s most accomplished pitchers. Over his career, he won 31 games and recorded 373 strikeouts in 489 innings.

Forsterling led the team in wins and appearances three times and in innings pitched and strikeouts twice. He also led the club in ERA once and was named Most Valuable Pitcher twice. The A’s have developed more than 50 players reaching professional baseball status, including 2002 World Series champion Jarrod Washburn.

He made his mark through both consistency and standout performances. Forsterling became the first A’s pitcher to record more than 100 strikeouts in a season, finishing with 110 in 1977 and 101 in 1978. His best single-game performance came in 1978, when he struck out 16 batters against Appleton. His competitive “take the ball and go” attitude became part of his reputation with the club. That season, he pitched both games of a doubleheader against first-place Madison, which finished with a 22–2 record.

Forsterling was inducted into the Sheboygan A’s Hall of Fame in 2018, joining his late brother, Fred, who was inducted in 2004. Baseball was a family tradition; their father, Roger, played for the Sheboygan Indians, a Brooklyn Dodgers affiliate.

Forsterling currently owns and runs Sun Prairie Pitch and Hit, which has positively impacted hundreds of youth athletes with his current offerings of pitching, hitting, catching, and fitness training.
